Instant Pots, toasters, slow cookers, toaster ovens, rice cookers, refrigerators, ovens – and that’s just the kitchen! The modern home almost has more appliances than you can count. How can you keep those appliances in good working condition, while keeping yourself, your family, or your tenants safe? The following tips can help:
- Inspect electrical wiring. Most of the time, power cords and other wiring attached to an appliance are perfectly fine. But electrical shorts, pests, and other issues can cause wiring or cords to malfunction, leaving your appliances vulnerable to more serious issues.
- Ensure proper ventilation. If you take a look at your appliances, you’ll notice that most of them have vents or cooling coils of some sort. Those are there for a reason! If an appliance regularly overheats, its lifespan can be severely limited.
- Keep appliances away from moisture. You probably know that electrical appliances and water don’t mix well, and don’t have a practice of setting your appliance in a puddle of water. But you might also consider the fact that people are good conductors of electricity – so be sure not to have damp hands or stand in water when handling your electrical appliances.
