If you were to ask every homeowner you know how they feel about the homeowners association (or HOA) where they live, you would undoubtedly get a very mixed bag of answers. A lot of people love their HOA, having a deep appreciation for the sense of community they encourage, and how the work they do improves the property value of their home, among other reasons. Others view their HOA as a restrictive burden, feeling like they’re paying someone a regular fee to tell them how to live their lives.
Regardless of which way you tend to view HOAs, if you’re in the market to buy a home, it’s important to do some research into any HOA that exercises authority over your prospective purchase. See if you can get a copy of their rules and bylaws. If possible, talk to some of your future neighbors to see if you can get a sense for how they feel about the HOA.
